Thirteen pretty easy miles today to Kirkby Stephen (pronounced Kirby Stephen) in about 5 hours.

While still in Orton we met up with a friendly farmer who loves talking to hikers. He talked while his fan club of young steers mooed constantly behind him

Farmer and steers. Steers to be sold in March 2015 and will be part of a cheeseburger near you shortly thereafter. |
It was supposed to rain all day but we never had a drop. We walked through moors and dales. Once in awhile, the trail would doubleback to the west. That's when you notice the wind. Very difficult to walk against. Most coast to coast hikers go west to east to keep the wind behind them.
We do a lot of walking between fields. About half have a regular gate we need to open and be sure to shut. The other half have some sort of stile or kissing gate we need to climb over or squeeze through. The climbing stiles are deadly at the end of the day when your legs are shot.

Some of us are resting. Earl and Lois are out adding to their beer tasting collection. Indian food for dinner tonight.
